- How do I put files into GPlayer?
To add files to your GPlayer app, you have to go to iTunes, and select the “Apps” tab. At the bottom of this page, there’s a “File sharing” section – just select GPlayer in the list, and add files from there. Note that you don’t have to sync your iPhone or iPad to iTunes to add movies. Just drop files in the “File sharing” tab, and they’ll be uploaded immediately. You can even use a friend’s iTunes to add videos to your own iPhone. Also, adding files over WiFi is supported. Indeed, WiFi is significantly slower than USB, and ruins the battery life.
If your IOS version is 4.0 or later, you can use FTP client to upload whole folders directly to GPlayer, with WINDOWS, you can use windows explorer to do this, with MAC, you can use build-in ftp client or cyberduck to do this. Pay attention to your FTP client’s encoding method, you can change server’s encoding method in the settings page of GPlayer.
- What kind of streams does GPlayer play?
GPlayer is able to play RTSP and MMS streams. For now those can’t be added to the media library, but you can click an RTSP or MMS url in Safari or Mail for example. If you want to use GPlayer to open HTTP/FTP streaming, add “gplayer:” prefix in the URL.
- I want to explicitely open an attachment with GPlayer?
If you want to watch an attachment in GPlayer(from Mail for example), just do a long press on the attachment. A menu will pop-up that will let you pick GPlayer as a player.
- iTunes won’t let me install GPlayer on my iPhone or iPod Touch?
Unfortunately, we had to drop support for older iOS devices such as the iPhone 3G or the first two versions of iPods. Indeed, after some testing, we realized those weren’t fast enough to provide a pleasant experience.
- HD MKV movies don’t play smoothly?
Currently, only iPad 2 supports 720p MKV file[with multithread enabled, maybe skip loopfilter needed], that’s to be expected. The other iDevices have limited computing power, and cannot handle the complex task of decoding HD movies in real time.
- Why the video and audio is not in sync?
That is because the CPU is not power enough to do video decoding, you can try to enable “Skip Frame” in the settings page .
- Is there a TV-out support?
It supports TV-out in iPhone4, iPod Touch4, iPhone4s and iPad 1/2.
- Does GPlayer support AirPlay? [APPLE TV needed]
Yes, but in the IOS4.x, only native video formats[MP4/MOV/M4V] can be AirPlayed to APPLE TV [hardware decoding method]
, from IOS5.0, it supports AirPlay Mirroring, any file format can be AirPlayed to your TV through APPLE TV.
- Why some AVI files crash on my iPad2 or iPhone4s?
Some AVI file swill crash on iPad2 and iPhone4s, just turn off Multiple Threads in the settings page for these crash files.
GPlayer has used FFmpeg for video/audio decoding.
FFmpeg is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 or later. However, FFmpeg incorporates several optional parts and optimizations that are covered by the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later. If those parts get used the GPL applies to all of FFmpeg.
1. Download and install the iPhone SDK 3.1. 2. Get the latest gas-preprocessor and install it in /usr/local/bin or some other directory in your $PATH. http://github.com/yuvi/gas-preprocessor/ 3. Get the latest FFmpeg from SVN (I have used FFmpeg Revision SVN-r21163.). 4. Configure FFmpeg with one of the following commands. These give a clean build with a default installation of iPhone SDK 3.1 on OSX Leopard. Other versions may vary. 4a. For iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 3G 32GB/64GB, use this command: ./configure --cc=/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1 --as='gas-preprocessor.pl /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1' --sysroot=/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.sdk --enable-cross-compile --target-os=darwin --arch=arm --cpu=cortex-a8 --enable-pic 4b. For other iPhone or iPod Touch models, use this command: ./configure --cc=/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1 --as='gas-preprocessor.pl /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1' --sysroot=/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.sdk --enable-cross-compile --target-os=darwin --arch=arm --cpu=arm1176jzf-s 5. Run make.
Best media player for iPad, plays all files smoothly. Hope it can supports tv out feature soon.

Just purchased and installed app (6/8/2011) to be able to view .wmv files attached to e-mails. Once installed, when I click on the movie attachment it provides a menu of apps to open the attachment from which i select Gplayer. However, instead of opening or playing the movie it sends me to a screen that says i have no movies in my library and i need to connect to iTunes. How do I get the app to play movie attachments in Mail?

This suggestion worked just fine to play the video attachment but the video attached to my e-mail did not get transferred to my GPlayer library. Is that a further enhancement needed to the software or is there an option that I should select to save the video attachment from iPad Mail app?
Another enhancement is suggested:
When downloading videos through iTunes from tken with my camera, they initially do not show in the GPlayer library as a thumbnail – only the GPlayer icon shows on each video. I had to open each video and play it and then stop it in order to replace the GPlayer icon with a frame from the video. When syncing videos between iTunes and the GPlayer app on my iPad, can you automatically select a frame from the video to display in the Gplayer library?

Next update, you can see files under Inbox folder in GPlayer.
and about your second suggestion: currently we designed to show the last stopped frame.

Just bought this app for my ipad2, seems to work alright. Only really tested AVI and MPG atm, but seems to play them fine.
Not sure if it’s a bug though, but when opening a video from an external source (such as through a file manager app (im using ‘awesome files’ atm), G player loads up but seems to hang and not play. However if u hit ‘done’ and go back to the main screen, and select that video again, it plays fine without problems.
Definitely keen to try out some 720p MKV files though!

Thanks for your suggestion.
– Supports landscape in iPhone, you need to close your iPhone’s lock function, double click home button, and scroll to top-left, and click the lock/unlock button
– Currently for the neat UI, we have no this option, you can input URL from safari app.

Hi,
Recently installed GPlayer in iPad 1.
It’s realy great to have the ability to copy films and subtitles in .srt format to watch localy.
After watching those movies I want to delete them but I can´t delete the subtitles!
Only movies shows for deletion in GPlayer’s menu!
How can I delete the srt files?
best regards,

This app is very good, even to Play 1080p are bit suffer. Ive download any movie player but somehow it difficult to transfer movie info iPad. Playing 1080p framerate are dropped to about 15 – 20 fps and also audio are not snyc well but the video files are considered watchable.
My suggestion are
1. Can manage files on iPad (create folder, moving files, rename etc)
2. Improvement on GUI, which can see files on list, icon, or thumbnail
3. Add FPS viewer while Play movies and cpu or memory usage while Play
4. Fix file size information not in MB but in GB if file size over 1 gb or 10 gb
5. Details on the files like codec, sound, resolution, time, type of files etc
6. If considereable revamp the GUI skin like standalone mediaplayer (ex : XBMC, PlayOn, etc)
I hope that my suggestion for improving the apps are consider for the next update

First of all your app is great. It’s the first player that can handle all kinds of subs.
But .. there’s one little issue:
The player can’t display multiple / parallel subtitles (for example descriptions during normal text) properly.
Always when multiple / parallel subtitles appear, one track overlaps the other and it flickers.
It doesn’t happen many times but when it happens it’s annoying and you can barely read the text.
By the way I’m talking about ass subs .. maybe it’s a help if I mention this
I hope there’s a way to fix that, it would be great
Thanks for your app and keep up the good work!!

Have you tried to zoom in/out the subtitle by two fingers?
Admin
September 14, 2011 at 3:28 am
Yeah, it’s the same problem.
The point is that both subtitle tracks acting like one ..
so if I resize the main subtitle track, the other one automatically does the same.
Or if I change the position of the main track, the other one follows it.
They are overlapped and bound together

Love gplayer. I use it every day.
I would very much like to adjust the subtitle text size. Right now the text is so big it disturbs the movie Im watching, and the lines are too long so I can not see what they are saying. It just shows the start of the sentence.
I would like to be able to adjust the volume a bit. I usually use earplugs and the lowest volume possible is too loud.
Also, if gplayer would remember that I checked the do-not-rotate-option, that would be great. Or a settingspanel where I could set always-play-in-landscape-mode. Maybe a landspace-left or landscape-right option.

subs.ass :

video.mkv + subs.ass :

Admin
November 10, 2011 at 4:16 am
Yes, I tried everything:
– zoom to min and max
– move to another position on the screen
It’s still mixed/overlapped and flickering.
Well, maybe it’s to complex to handle/implement such a matter.
Other popular video player apps don’t even display those sub passages.
Nonetheless your player app is (one of) the best and it’s enjoyable to use it.
As for my issue maybe you can figure out something .. please let me know

First of all I must say I love your app. My best iPhone player so far, gesture for ff and rw are genius, no idea why Apple hasn’t used it so far.
Just one hing that concerns me – in iTunes I can’t see the files already downloaded into GPlayer. You wrote that latest update made it possible to backup with iTunes and it is now disabled by default.
So my question is – can’t I just see the files in iTunes but without backup? I had it like this in Oplayer I guess.

Hi GPlayer developers! Firstly I have to thank you for this (mostly) amazing video player, keep doing your great work!
Now on to the issue which for me and probably many others is a real deal breaker: Overlapping and flickering subtitles. It’s been mentioned here before twice, but from what I can tell you haven’t really acknowledged it. I put together a video with a few samples of the issue so you can really see the problem for yourselfs.
I know this isn’t an unfixable problem because GoodPlayer on iPad has a decent implementation of ssa/ass subtitles. Anyways, I hope this short message brought this problem a little bit more to your attention and I’m definetly certain you can fix this sooner or later!
Crash
December 22, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Yeah, that’s it .. it’s a problem with almost every player app
Also I miss the original fonts .. but that’s too much to expect I guess and probably one limit of a mobile device
So after struggling with this and that I found a way to enjoy Animes on the iPad to the fullest
What I do is to encode and hardsub my videos
At first the big problem was the long encoding time, but after some research and experiments I found a way to encode 8-bit-720p-24-minute-videos in 5-10 minutes (in my case in 7 minutes with a MacBook Pro 2,26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8GB RAM) into a 480p-Apple-friendly H.264 mp4 video
I still use the GPlayer and watch my videos with the hardware decoding smooth and energy-saving
Those who are interested can download this little tutorial:

Ah .. and sorry for the off-topic

I now remember the original problem, the application only shows settings and only steams (via gplayer:) if there is at least one file. It crashes otherwise.
I’d love it to be able to quit and revert back to the original application (Safari in my case) after streaming is done.

Enable backup in the settings page, then you can see files in iTunes, also you can click edit in the app, and manage files in the GPlayer.

Wasn’t there a proceeding bar that shows what percentage of a file i’ve got when uploading over wifi? Now, I can’t see any sign when to stop wifi uploading.
I need to know when to watch the result. If downloading is stopped before finishing, it has to be started all over again. This is pretty inconvenient, you know.

Hi, GPlayer is awesome!
I do however have one issue – it seems that whenever I connect my iPod and transfer purchases, the movies I have in GPlayer are removed.
I use solely WiFi for adding media files through the web browser.
Is this a known issue?

If I have 2hours file then what do I need to watch the whole 2 hours video again. Please advice on the fix. This is the 2nd time I am posting this message. But so far no reaponse. Thanks Venkat

I, too, had this problem with a few video files. I can’t recall the particular formats but for whatever reason it seemed to be related to how the videos were encoded. I just re-encoded (transcoded) them into different formats using Handbrake and reloaded the transcoded videos. Now they work as expected.

Hi, I have a few videos in MP4 format with accompanied subtitle files in ASS format. I can get the subtitle to show when I use “Software Decoding” by pressing on the subtitle icon in the play menu. However, when I use “Hardware Decoding,” I do not get this icon anymore.
How do I get subtitle to show up when using “Hardware Decoding?”

Yep, that only works when software decoding, hardware decoding is quicktime from apple, we can’t modify the function of it.

Hi again,
I have the new IPAD (2012), and almost all of my 720p mkvs show artifacts (discolored clusters of pixels) when played. I did not have this issue before with my IPAD 2.
One file, for example: “[Elysium]Lucky.Star.EP01(BD.720p.AAC.DA)[0BB96AD8].mkv.” The artifacts can be seen within 5 minutes of the episode.
Do you know of any compatibility problems between your software, GPLAYER, and the new IPAD?

GPlayer has been indispensable with old family videos and movies!
A couple parts of GPlayer could use improvements (I use the first iPad):
(1) Full screen password entry. Entering a password is a popup window that only partially covers the files & folders; you can still partially see beneath the password box.
(2) Improved password setting. There’s no confirmation (double-entry) of the password when you enter a new one. If I accidentally mistype the password, I won’t know it’s incorrect until I open GPlayer, and I’d be required to uninstall and reinstall the app (along with the time-consuming reloading of dozens & dozens of videos).
(3) More sensitive accelerometer detection. At times I would open and close applications all in landscape mode, and then open GPlayer. For some reason it will not detect the orientation of the iPad and open in portrait mode instead. Further, there’s sometimes a noticeable delay in GPlayer recognizing the correct orientation to the point that I would have to pick it up and rotate the iPad in every direction.

April 14, 2012 at 3:54 pm
To add one further comment to above:
(4) Built-in web browser; or an optimized, stripped down version strictly for video playback. It’d make for a seamless experience watching movies on websites and being able to download them by pressing & holding on the video.

Using Itunes 10 with GPlayer installed on itouch 4, I still do not see File Sharing section which according to apple support means – ” your iOS device does not have any apps that support File Sharing”.
But obviously GPlayer has to support File sharing. Is this a limitation of the free version? I just want to play AVI files. I am happy to buy this if I know it will work on the itouch. thanks.

Today I encountered an issue that made me lose all of my files iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.
Here’s what I did:
Created a folder.
Put several .AVI files inside this folder.
Launched a video, but realized I launched the wrong one and immediately clicked OK, before any picture appeared on the screen.
Went back to the files list but the folder was GONE, as were all the files that were inside.
I tried to kill the app from the multitask bar and relaunch it, but they weren’t there.
After that I tried rebooting the iPad, and, while it was rebooting, the “installing bar” showed up on the screen (the same one that appears after you restore a backup or is updating the firmware on the iPad).
Cheers,

I love this app. Use it every day. The only problem I seem to run into is stylized subtitles, or more specifically when there’s supposed to be more than one subtitle on the screen. For example, there’s supposed to be subtitles at the top of the screen for a radio announcement in the background, and the main dialogue at the bottom. In Gplayer, the two “fight” each other at the top of the screen and you end up seeing the subtitles flickering back and forth or sometimes one will overcome the other causing you to miss sequences of dialog (and end up reading the background dialog instead which is barely audible anyway). Is there plans to fix this in the near future?

Hi GPlayer staff!
I absolutely love this app, best video player out there.
I’ve never had any problems, however, since the update there have been glitches where videos restart every time I close the app rather than playing from where I left off.
Although it’s not such a huge problem, it does however slightly deteriorate the experience.
Prior to the update it had been working fine, so just a heads up.
Even with this minor issue, it’s still a brilliant app.

Dear Developer,
Please consider adding landscape orientation lock to your app.
When I watch videos in bed, the screen rotates to
portrait-orientation, which makes the app useless for me.
Apple’s own video player locks videos in landscape mode automatically.
Can you please add this feature as an option?

October 15, 2012 at 5:20 am
Yes, I just noticed that the icon to the right of the control pane – during playback – does lock the orientation! Silly me …
Unfortunately, this only works when GPlayer is not using hardware-decoding (which is any non h264-mp4 file on my ipod). When GPlayer encounters an h264-mp4 file it uses the existing iOS functions for playback – in these cases, there is no orientation-lock icon, nor is there an option to do so in the config panes. I need this as an option.
Thanks for the help, however!
JB
October 14, 2012 at 11:03 pm
Default hardware decoding has no this interface to lock the screen.
Admin
October 15, 2012 at 5:23 am
I can live without that fine. But can you not add an option to enable this in the config panels?
When GPlayer uses hardware-decoding playback, I simply want it to behave like Apple’s VideoPlayer – and lock the screen to landscape-orientation (or provide an option to do so).
Thank-you for reading.

Is it possible to have the same feature as VLC had? They had a random frame or something like that.
Arno
October 15, 2012 at 11:01 am
GPlayer will use the last frame of the movie you watched as a thumbnail. However, this is only for videos that it itself will play e.g. XVID or other formats.
On h264-mp4 files, GPlayer generally just passes these on to Apple’s hardware playback; as such, GPlayer isn’t normally playing these files itself. These type of files do not generate a thumbnail in GPlayers interface.
It would be desirable if GPlayer could fetch a thumbnail from mp4 files, but at the moment it doesn’t. There is no real technical reason why it can’t be implemented, but the programmers have not yet added this feature. Just as they have not added orientation-lock for mp4 files.
Hopefully both features – and more – will be forthcoming.

I am streaming video from my Synology DS112 and play via DS Video app and Gplayer is required to stream movies via DSM to Ipod.
I get two black bars on the sides of the video when I fill.

Oh, thank you!
That would be great to view my movies on the whole screen. But what a bummer after paying full price after hearing about it and DSM recommending it and then it not working right.

Hi, very enthusiastic about Gplayer, thanks for this app. One thing I can’t get to work: I have subtitles correctly named in the same folder as the movie, but do not get them on the screen. In earler responses you mentioned to check the decoding option in the information tab, however in this tab there is no option for subtitle whatsoever, It has the caption “subtitle” with no possibility to choose/click anything. can you help out? Thanks for your time.

Must be this format:abc.avi with abc.srt

As mentioned, the naming is exactly the same, in the format you mentioned, that’s not the issue. Any idea why the subtitle is not choosable in the information tab?

I have the same problem. But I open the file via a DLNA server.
maybe it works only when the files are locally stored on the IPAD.
can someone confirm this, or do I something wrong.
dranos
October 26, 2012 at 8:59 am
Dranos, you’re setup is indeed the same as mine, going through a DLNA, This could indeed be it. Hope someone can confirm/resolve this.
Jurgen
October 26, 2012 at 9:02 am
Jurgen,
I tested it by by opening (open with gplayer) both files via the local storage from my webdav filebrowser (ds file for my synology Nas) the files are then copied to the folders in gplayer. After that the subs are working:
Conclusion; srt subs are not supporter via DLNA.
But I found a way to store the files locally without iTunes or the integrated wifi download method.

If I download a video on my IPAD with DS file (no idea where it save it), and if I click click on it, the gplayer icon appear but don’t play the video.
If I play the video directly from NAS with gplayer it work fine.
Any idea what’s happening?

GPlayer doesn’t support audio codec – AC3, E-AC3, TrueHD codec. You must upload to your device movie with any different audio codec any movie will be played as usually. OR change application until GPlayers developers resovle problems with taxes for these audio codecs (If at all).

I installed GPlayer on my iPad1 running iOS 5.1.
(1) When I output a 480p or 720p file to either my 720p plasma or my 1080p LCD HDTV and select TV out, the images have a fine cross-hatching and the colors are dulled, muted and no longer bright. Also, the image doesn’t fill the screen, no matter what aspect ratio I pick in the GPlayer menu. How do I fix this?
(2) When I’m outputting a file to the TV, the iPad screen is black but still on; if the file has subtitles, the iPad screen shows a black background and subtitles. If I press the iPad’s sleep/wake button, it stops playback. Is there a way to completely disable the iPad screen while watching videos to save on battery life?
Thanks!
P.S. Using your fingers to expand and move the subtitles is brilliant.

During FTP upload, it the filename starts with a number, the program removes the number. eg if I have files
1 – filenameA.wmv
2 – filenameB.wmv
These files will be renamed to
filenameA.wmv
filenameB.wmv
I want to keep the original file name with the leading number to keep them sorted.
HTTP upload does not remove the number, but only allow upload one file at a time.

No, it crashed on the iPad. The videos that i have copied manually works fine but if try to run something over the network it crashes the player. Earlier, i used to play it over the network but it started crashing since i uploaded videos manually. I have the application on my iPhone and it works fine (note- iPhone doesn’t have videos uploaded/copied), hence i am sure the videos are good.

I bought your app to play video from a Synology NAS, and although it plays recorded videos via DS File I can’t find any way to play anything through their Videostation app which plays live TV streams from a tuner dongle as well. Is there a workaround or support coming for this? Videostation prompts you to install GPlayer, ACePlayer or Oplayer, and Oplayer does support this, I hope I haven’t wasted my money, as I bought it only for the live streaming. .

I love the app and have been using it for a quite a while now, but since the update to version 2 I have had a few issue’s, all problems were not there in previous version.
– I can’t see the full file names of my videos, making it hard to load the correct file to watch.
– when i now connect my phone to the PC i can’t see the folders and files that are on my phone.
– Minor problem – can you add a setting to be able to change the background from yellow, as a prefer the old version as it made the app easier to use.
I’m sure your working on the issues but do you have a time scale of when the update will be posted.
